A CHARMING IMAGE FROM THE AUSTRIAN MASTER OF DOG
The original painting
has suffered in the past from some rather over zealous cleaning, the effects of
which have been completely eliminated from our print. Recovering the colours and
cleaning off the dirt has produced an adorable image worthy of any
household with an affection for dogs and terriers in particular.
Carl Reichert was born
in Vienna in August 1836. He studied at the Academy of Drawing in Gratz.
He then worked in Munich and Rome before returning to Vienna in 1869 and
later moving to Gratz (date unknown). His reputation was built upon finely
detailed, small scale studies of domestic dogs and sometimes cats. The
above is typical of his superb grasp of composition laced with a fine
sense of humour. His works are now highly prized by collectors
around the world with prices for his work rising sharply over the past
