BIRDS OF AMERICA BY JOHN JAMES AUDUBON (1785 - 1851)
PLATE 46 - Engraved by R. HAVELL

BARRED OWL

CLOSE UP - John Audubon, Birds of America - Barred Owl showing corrected left brow and eye.

BARRED OWL - Stryx nebulosa (Strix varia)
THREATENING A
 GREY SQUIRREL - Saurus ancreus.
IMAGE REF: AUD005

The original painting does not include the Grey Squirrel nor the knotted and fractured branch to the extreme right. Audubon instructed Havell to include the squirrel from another work. Seemingly, Audubon got himself in a bit of mess on the left hand side of the owl's face with dark brown paint covering almost the entire brow and exhibiting a hideously bloated and discoloured left eye (see below), both of which were dutifully copied by Havell. We suspect that this was in order to cover up an accident of some sort. Our restorer has taken the audacious liberty of correcting these two very obvious errors. The catch-lights in the eyes remain as shown on the print rather than the painting.
