The original painting does not include the
Grey Squirrel nor the knotted and fractured branch to the
extreme right.
Audubon instructed Havell to include the squirrel from another
work. Seemingly, Audubon got himself
in a bit of mess on the left hand side of the owl's face with
dark brown paint covering almost the entire brow and
exhibiting a hideously bloated and discoloured left eye (see
below), both of which were dutifully copied by Havell. We
suspect that this was in order to cover up an accident of some
sort. Our restorer has taken the audacious liberty of
correcting these two very obvious errors. The catch-lights in
the eyes remain as shown on the print rather than the painting.
