The Louisiana
Flag, also known as the Copper or Red Iris, was painted by
Joseph Mason whom Audubon described thus "... he now draws
flowers probably better than any man in America.". Audubon
completed the work, adding the birds and caterpillar to Mason's finished plant,
in 1821.
